4 The Galloway Hills Bargrennan to St John's Town of Dalry
Kist maker: Trevor Leat (basket maker)
Design: otter
Date: from retreat of the last glaciation, about 12,000 years ago

The otter has been chosen for this watery stretch of the SUW, with its many lochs and water-courses as it is very much part of the 'secret heritage'. Otters move around a good deal in the winter before deciding where to have their young in the spring. A female and her young may then stay in the same locality for a few months, catching fish and eels. There are plenty of these animals around but you will have to be lucky (and quiet!) to see them.

British grown willow in a variety of colours, sometimes combined with hazel, makes Trevor Leat’s work strong and distinctive. He uses traditional techniques for his range of generous, durable baskets and accepts commissions for architectural and garden projects. Follow the subtle clues that Trevor has left near the path to find the kist he has constructed.
