5 The Ken-Nith Watershed Dalry
to Sanquhar
Kist maker: Andrew Weatherhead (ceramics)
Design taken from: Peden's Mask in the National
Museums of Scotland
Date: 340 years ago
Peden's Mask is a surprising, and somewhat
terrifying image from the Covenanting times. When Charles
II came to the throne in 1662, he ordered Scottish
ministers to comply with the English Church or cease to
preach. Alexander Peden was one of the three hundred or
more Scots ministers who refused to comply. He became an
outlaw who went from place to place in the south of
Scotland, preaching in the open air at 'conventicles'.
His mask, made of leather, with a beard of human hair,
was an attempt to disguise himself whilst he was on the
road.
