Peden's Mask is a surprising, and somewhat terrifying image from the Covenanting times. When Charles II came to the throne in 1662, he ordered Scottish ministers to comply with the English Church or cease to preach. Alexander Peden was one of the three hundred or more Scots ministers who refused to comply. He became an outlaw who went from place to place in the south of Scotland, preaching in the open air at 'conventicles'. His mask, made of leather, with a beard of human hair, was an attempt to disguise himself whilst he was on the road.

Andrew Weatherhead takes great joy in the decoration of his pots, ‘I try to leave clues to my identity: finger marks or prints left in the clay or on the glaze, nuances in the brushstrokes or, more obviously, my signature.’
